26th September 2001 - European Day of Languages

26th September 2001 has been designated 'European Day of Languages.' On this day, institutions, businesses, organisations and individuals across Europe will participate in activities which will celebrate and promote languages.

We have put together some guidelines to aid the many people who are intending to hold a celebratory event for the Languages Challenge on the European Day of Languages.

Below are examples of the kinds of events and activities which will take place on the European Day of Languages:

European Awards for Languages - Awards Ceremony
The winners of the 2001 European Awards for Languages will be honoured at the UK European Awards ceremony at the Spanish Embassy.

The End of Babel? Meeting the Challenge of global English in a Multilingual Society
A one day Symposium to celebrate the European Day of Languages at the University of Southampton

Bedfordshire School Direct Services
All the Headteachers in Bedfordshire will be challenged to take up the Languages Challenge, learn a new language and deliver an assembly to their school on the European Day of Languages.

Lady Lumley's School
The school is planning a festival of languages, involving the school, feeder primary schools and the community. This will include displays, ICT tasks, hands-on research activities and food.

Saxmundam Middle School, Ipswich
A day to celebrate languages will take place.

Caldew School, Dalston
The school is planning a 'Languages Day'.

The Warwick School
Activities which have been taking place throughout the Year will culminate on this day with a sponsored Languages Challenge on 26th September, which will replace the school's usual sponsored walk.

Harris CTC School
The school is planning a 'European Language Day.'

Kent County Council
Kent County Council will be holding a special conference on 26th September.

The University of the West of England
The university will be organising a wide media publicity campaign and survey of language capabilities of departing passengers at the Bristol International Airport to coincide with the European Day of Languages.

Queen's Film Theatre in Belfast
Queen's Film Theatre will be launching a month-long festival of Cine-lingua foreign language films and events on 26th September 2001. A number of illustrated talks will take place, including a talk and demonstration on deaf awareness by a sign language expert and trainer from the Royal National Institute for Deaf People. This event will also demonstrate some of the differences in sign languages between different countries for the hard of hearing, as well as provide further information on how to learn more about deaf awareness and signing.

Wokingham District Council
Wokingham District Council will be holding a one-day conference entitled 'Sign Language in the Workplace - a European Perspective.' The conference will bring together some of Europe's most renowned speakers on the subject of sign language, with informative, interactive workshops demonstrating how technology can support deaf people using sign language in the workplace.

Glenrothes College, Fife
The college has a full programme of events for the European Year of Languages. On 26th September, a video-conference will be organised with some of Glenrothe's twin-towns.

Cyfarthfa High School, Merthyr Tydfil
The school will be organising a series of activities to promote an awareness of the importance of languages and cultural diversity throughout the European Union, involving pupils and staff. A 6th Form Conference is planned for 26th September.

Perins Community School, Hampshire
The school will be holding an open evening and organising a 'German café.'

St Robert of Newminster Catholic School and Sixth Form College
The whole school will participate in a European Day.

The Sandon School, Essex
The 'Linguanauts Activities Club' for Years 7 and 8 will be continuing its lively programme of activities. As well as French and German language classes, past events have included 'Salve! Talk like an Ancient Roman,' 'Sayonara,' and 'From Russia with Love..'

Queen's College, London
A whole-school language day with lectures and film is planned, culminating in a multilingual concert.

Brynteg School
A European evening of singing, dancing, reciting poetry and sampling of European food will take place.

Southwick Primary School
The school will hold a 'New friends day' where the culture of Italy, Spain and Finland will be explored. A Thursday Italian club for Year 5 will also be piloted in the school.

Calundon Castle School
Pupils will participate in drama, video-conferencing and e-mail with other schools and food tasting will take place.

Harringay Professional Development Centre
The centre will hold a languages evening which will focus on Community Languages.

Suffolk LEA and Northgate Languages Centre
The Suffolk Festival of Languages will be held on 26 and 27 September at Suffolk College, Ipswich. Each day will run from 10am until 4pm, and there will be an evening session on 26 September which will be open to the general public as well as schools. The programme includes ICT demonstrations, taster sessions, a Languages Treasure Trail, live music and dance performances and school contributions. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, London
On 26th September the tables will be reversed with pupils, who speak lesser known languages, becoming teachers for the day, providing the chance for pupils and staff to sample languages such as Somali and Urdu.

University of Dundee
The University of Dundee Rector, comedian Fred MacAulay, accepted to take part in the Languages Challenge by learning to tell jokes and greetings in Chinese and Gaelic. Fred will use his new Chinese skills during a sponsored walk of the Great Wall of China in September and his Gaelic on 26 September during his show on BBC Scotland.

Broughton High School, Edinburgh
A wide range of activities are planned at the school to celebrate the European Day of Languages.

Dorcan Technology College
A very active programme of events is planned by the college across departments. It is hoped that all staff will dress up as European celebrities, and the PE department has agreed to promote European sports on the day, offering French 'boules' and handball. The Technology and Art departments will be cooking European foods and making artefacts (such as the Eiffel Tower). During lessons on the day, the modern languages department is planning to set a challenge to each class taught, such as to learn another language or to participate in a European Treasure Hunt.

Lannock JMI
The whole school will celebrate the day with assemblies, singing and brief tasters of French (possibly German and Spanish) for all year groups.

Ardingly College, West Sussex
The school is planning a multilingual church service in the morning. The kitchens will provide a continental breakfast and a European menu at lunchtime. Each department has been asked to teach special lessons for the day with a European flavour to them. There will be a variety of activities (quiz, boules, salsa/flamenco dancing classes, cookery sessions at lunchtime. In the evening the schools hopes to host a debate "This House believes there is no such thing as a European citizen". Throughout the day all the school's language teachers (Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, German, Spanish, French) will be involved. The school's challenge will be to find out how many different nationalities and languages are represented in the school.

Inverness High School
The school will be celebrating the Day in a variety of ways.

Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School, Lancashire
The school will be holding a Euro Week during week-beginning 24th September. Cross-curricular activities will take place and foreign food will be eaten. A French café will be created, and students will participate in competitions.

Colmers School, Birmingham
The school canteen will serve food from a different European country each day. There will be a sponsored French breakfast on 26th September to raise money for Médcins Sans Frontières and special assemblies with a languages theme will take place. The school will conduct a survey of teachers to find out which languages they speak and what they believe the benefits of language skills are.

Lingualearn and the Brighton and Hove Education Business Partnership
An exciting language competition will be launched on the Internet by language teaching company, Lingualearn and the Brighton and Hove Education Business Partnership.

Students from Brighton and Hove secondary schools and sixth form colleges are invited to enter the competition which is designed to encourage the use of creative writing in either French, Spanish or German. Entries will be judged by Lingualearn consultants at the end of November at two levels, GSCE and at 16+; all entries have to be submitted via the Internet at the following URL:

Tile Hill Wood School and Language College
Pupils throughout the school will participate in a display competition on a country of their choice.

Dulwich College
Students will take part in Hebrew taster sessions and interdepartmental activities. Foreign language films will be screened and a tri-school debate in French will take place.

Liberton High School, Edinburgh
The school will be organising cross-departmental activities, the school canteen will be serving Italian food and the Home Economics department will arrange an international buffet. Football stars from Hibs and Hearts and an ex-pupil who is now a Euro MP will be visiting the school. A Euroquiz, wall displays, video-conferencing with feeder primary schools and Language Challenge activities will also take place.

Holyrood High School, Edinburgh
A school prize ceremony will take place in Italian and all departments will focus on languages.

Chipping Camden School, Gloucestershire
A continental breakfast will be available to all pupils and the canteen will serve food from different countries. The winners of a poetry competition will be announced on the day.

Newbridge Integrated College, Banbridge
A variety of cross-curricular activiites will be taking place during the week.

Markethill High School
The school will be introducing a new foreign language into their school curriculum on 26th September 2001. A variety of other activities are also planned for the week.

Downpatrick Primary School
The school will celebrate the Day with songs, games and a special assembly.

Holy Trinity Primary School, Lisburn
The school will be organising a tour of Europe in nursery rhymes.

BELB, Northern Ireland
BELB are celebrating the achievements of pupils in special and mainstream schools by having an award ceremony in Belfast City Hall. Pupils from special schools will receive certificates for the Acredited Scheme for Modern Languages for Special Schools.

Six Belfast Schools, Northern Ireland
In the afternoon, pupils form six Belfast schools who have participated in a pilot project for innovative new accreditation in 'Welcome Europe' will receive certificates. The Lord Mayor will host the event.

Queen's University Belfast
The university will organise a number of events for the day. The Language Centre will offer a chance to sample a variety of languages, cultures and cuisines to staff and students. There will be an exhibition of languages 'In other words - languages of Europe' at the Visitors' Centre. The School of Languages is launching its modern langaues competition for schools on the day - 'Design a web page in the target language of your choice' - a competition for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils.

South Lanarkshire Schools
A pupil-run conference on the importance of languages to business is planned.

Dundee City Council
The Council will organise a 'Taste a language in your lunchtime' scheme for adults on the day.

West Lothian Council
The Council are organising a poster competition for primary school children called 'Why learn a language?'

Moseley School, Birmingham
There will be a wide range of activities for years 7, 8 and 9, and year 12s will also be involved. Activities include games, tasters, aerobics in French, poetry-writing, dance, workshops, quizzes and food-based activities at lunchtime.

Bradford University
An exhibition in the main entrance to the university is planned.

LANACOS
The Awards ceremony for the winner of the LANACOS 'Kent Languages Competition,' which was open to the Kent business community, will take place on 26th September 2001.
